DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PUBLIC, SOCIAL, COMMUNITY AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Social Housing is an umbrella term for Public Housing and Community Housing

Public Housing

  • Owned and managed by the government.
  • Publicly owned land and dwellings.
  • 15% – 25% of wage or welfare payment.

Community Housing

  • Managed by Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and Community Housing Providers (CHPs)
  • Can be publicly owned land; but is often privitisated, owned by non-public entities.
  • >30% of wage or welfare payment.

Affordable Housing is it’s own thing altogether and is developer-led

    • a percentage below market value.
      • 80% of market rent in NSW
      • meaning it’s often not even affordable!
